Moo Lander by The Sixth Hammer

The first Moo Lander Demo opens up on a crashed spaceship that quickly gets attacked by a large cow. Your ship’s AI instructs you to go after the cow in order to obtain milk, an extremely valuable resource for your alien species. You then travel through a nearby cave and are introduced to the different mechanics of the game. The demo ends in an epic battle with the cow that attacked you, but you are instructed not to kill it.

The mechanics are slowly introduced and easy enough to get the hang of quickly. I never struggled to discover a button or mechanic. I did struggle with movement a bit, the hit boxes of objects seemed to be larger than the art. Every obstacle you collide with causes push back and the walls bounce you, so I had several bounce related deaths.

The art style is beautiful and seems to be more developed than the gameplay right now. I am excited to see the rest of the game match that quality. The storyline previewed is interesting but does result in a tricky boss battle. There is only one option to use against the cow, due to being unable to hurt it, and the cow blocks the move about 85% of the time. Both the player and the cow use sonic attacks that cannot go through the platforms, but the cow is able to bounce you into thorns.

The demo was fun to play and only took fifteen minutes to complete. Afterwards, I learned that a new demo was coming and I immediately decided I would play it once released.

The second Moo Lander Demo opens up the same way as the first but quickly changes the gameplay. They introduced a milk shield and a milk sword, creating a variety of new interactions. The storyline through the demo remains the same but is greatly improved.

I did forget the buttons a few times during the playthrough, but it wasn’t game-ending. Movement was easier this time, I ran into fewer things and had less push back when I did hit things. The deaths I experienced were my fault, like no way to blame the environment this time.

The game managed to get prettier. Subtle new art things were added, there are little creatures flying around now that make it feel more lively. There were also new enemies added, which made it so that there was no longer only one fight in the demo. The big boss battle was a mixture of lethal and nonlethal combat due to the cow calling minions.

Overall, I really enjoyed the demo. I am super excited for the game to come out. It maintained my interest and the new content pushed playtime to half an hour.
